About the Artist
Josh Hicks is an illustrator and painter working primarily in casein and ink. His work draws from the pulp adventure magazines of the 1920s and 1930s — Weird Tales, Black Mask, and the lurid cover art that defined an era of American illustration.
Working on gessoed panels and illustration board, he builds images through opaque layers of casein paint, chasing the matte, graphic quality of vintage printed material. India ink washes add atmosphere — fog, shadow, and the suggestion of things half-seen.
When not painting, he's filling sketchbooks with thumbnails, figure studies, and compositional experiments that feed into larger finished work.
